Blog Tour: Escaping Demons by Killian Wolf [REVIEW & GIVEAWAY]

Book Title: Escaping Demons
Author: Killian Wolf
Publisher: Grim House Publishing
Release: August 30th 2020
Genre: Urban Fantasy (New Adult)

Goodreads US UK

One phone call landed me the perfect job. Too bad it didn’t come with life insurance.

I didn’t think this job would be anything special. Sure, the first phone call was weird, and yeah, maybe it wasn’t the smartest idea to come to someone’s house before I met them in person, but Dax seemed nice. All he wanted was a caretaker for his sick father.

Oh, and an exorcist for the spirits haunting his family’s estate. Now he’s left me alone with his father, and the ghosts know my name. Caring for an old man with dementia, I can do. Fighting evil spirits? That’s way above my pay grade.

But Dax has disappeared so I have to learn on my own or both Orlando and I might not live to see tomorrow…

I received a copy of this book from Rachel’s Random Resources and the publisher for reviewing purposes as part of a blog tour. This does not influence my opinions in any way.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

I believe that this book is the first installment in a series and I can say that this definitely a promising start. I don’t really use half stars in my rating but I’m gonna break that principle for this one, as I think this is more of a 3.5-star read for me.

So the book started off slowly which made me a bit impatient but I feel that the buildup to the climax was worth it here. As the story develops, it quickly became very interesting so I found myself getting really immersed. Although I have to mention that some parts of the book, I wasn’t a fan of, especially where it slows down a bit too much for my liking.

On the other hand, the atmosphere in this book did not disappoint. For some reason, I did not anticipate for there to be a horror aspect to this so it came as a pleasant surprise to me. Specifically, I found myself squirming whenever the dolls come up because I just find them super creepy. The supernatural aspect coupled with the horror vibe it emanates, gave readers a worthwhile reading experience!

In terms of the characters, our protagonist has to be my favorite. Addison is such a strong character which made her very likable for me. I empathized with her every step of the way because she definitely did not know what she has gotten herself into, but despite that, she remained strong and determined instead of cowering away or immediately giving up. I also appreciate that she takes absolutely zero shit from anyone, especially her boyfriend who is, frankly, very toxic.

Ambrose is another character I find interesting. His penchant for feeling and doing things that no reaper should makes him a bit human, despite being a supernatural being. Meanwhile, I would have appreciated to know Ava, Addison’s best friend, better in the book.

Overall, I had my ups and downs with this book but I still think it’s a good read. If you’re a fan of urban fantasy with a bit of horror to it, try this one out.
