Luxe’s Thoughts: UK vs US Book Covers

“Don’t judge a book by its cover.” Haven’t we all heard this idiom at least once in our lives? I don’t know about you, but I do judge books by their covers more often than I would like to admit. I mean, book covers give me like an itty bitty, tiny feel of what the book is about. Well, at least some of them do; other covers can be deceiving. My point is, I allow myself every now and then to judge a book by its cover. But that’s another story.

Today, let’s talk about the thing that boggled my mind when I first got into book blogging: different covers of the exact same book. Picture this. A girl emerging from a bookstore with a book in hand. The same girl going blog hopping and seeing the said book’s title with a completely different look.

After a few hours searching, my slow-ass finally realized that these are the same books but published with different covers in other countries for the purpose of marketing. Needless to say, that made me soooo excited because who doesn’t like multiple copies of  a book just for their varying dust jacket despite having literally no funds to buy them just yet? I know I do.

So… Let’s look at some of the differences of the UK and US covers of books on my wishlist/TBR! There’s a little poll as well for each book for you to vote which ones you prefer better, so we can evaluate these books together!

NOTE: UK covers are on the left while the US covers are the ones on the right!

I personally like the US one better, with its gold foil, since it’s very sparkly. And for me, sparkles make everything better!! Although I wouldn’t mind having the UK one which is still very pretty.

Heartless by Marissa Meyer

The US cover wins again for me on this one. I just imagine it looking better on a hardcover as compared to the other one. Also, I love the black and red combination. It looks so classy!

The Diviners by Libba Bray

   15958916       34722429

I’m quite confused on what covers to put on this book because there are a lot. I’ve actually read this book, with the first ever book cover (I believe), but I just thought I’d put this on the list just because. I adore the UK cover! It just screams “READ ME” in my opinion.

Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder

I seriously can’t decide between these two!! The UK one is more minimalist and would probably look good on the shelf but the US one, UGH! *turns into the heart eyes emoji* So I’ll let you decide!

Caraval by Stephanie Garber

My vote for this one goes to the UK cover. Although the US cover looks great, I also think that it has too much going on. And I love the color scheme of the UK version better, especially the gold!

Enchantée by Gita Trelease

Initially, I was so torn on this one as well. I think both are absolutely GORGEOUS but the lack of color and the title size/style on the first one wasn’t as eye-catching compared to the second one so US cover gets my vote!

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

  34530151      32075671

My vote for this one goes to the UK book cover, no doubt! It’s just so much more appealing to me maybe because of the gorgeous girl on the cover!

So among the 7 books listed above, I voted 3 UK covers and 3 US covers, with 1 still undecided. I’ve had a lot of fun writing this blog post, since I don’t usually do discussion posts, and I hope you enjoyed reading as well!

  1. High school friend and I investigated this, during one of our bookstore trips we’ve noticed the multiple copy thing going on. Since then grew our obsession with it. We love comparing them, had learned the difference, and their prices phew, the UK mostly are waaay chepaer than the US version, we’ve gathered. (Both dito s’atin and on Depo) Also, favoring me-you’ll hate me because I like the UK version better. From cover design to the feel of them in my hands, they’re smaller than the US.

I like Strange the Dreamer UK Version better (hehe) and this one confuses me, there’s another cover version for Heartless? The white one with shiny red foil-ish on the cover. (ISBN13 9781509814138) Have you seen To All the Boy I’ve Loved Before and Harry Potter UK Edition? I love them though I don’t particularly own them hahaha (I’ll just leave the ISBN for reference for TATBILB ISBN13 9781407149073 and HP ISBN13 9781408856772)

    • It is pretty exciting seeing the same books with different covers for the first time. And I could NEVER hate you! ❤ But I do like how the UK books are smaller than the US. 😉

I was hella confused with that as well! But a friend on Goodreads, which I know is from the UK, shelved this particular cover for Heartless so I decided to go with it. Yes, I have seen the UK edition of TATBILB and I like it better than the US!! And the Harry Potter, OH MY GOSH!! They're prettier than my whole existence, and more expensive hahaha.

Thank you so much for commenting Ate Justine! Nag effort ka pa sa paghanap ng ISBN13 huhu love ya ❤

      • *releases a long exhale* hahaha, right the size is perfect. When I ride the train in the morning and it starts crowding it’s not as awkward with the US ones.

OHHH, I see, I have that version kasi, I thought that was the only verson. I think we should research more about this discrepancy. I KNOW, YOU SHOULD SEE THE SPINE NG TATBILB GANDAA. And yessssss, ang mahal super tempted na nga ako with Depo kasi nag 10% off tapos nag price drop it costs cheaper than FB.

Hahaha, alam mo naman willing mag puyat for the love of books! And it’s your first discussion post. As the tita I should be? Hahaha

      • I SAW IT!! *drools unattractively* And I think you should give in to the temptation hehe. Sayang 10% discount, until 27 nalang ata! (I may or may not have impulsively bought a book just because of that discount grr).

Yay!! I feel so lovedddd ❤ Hihihi

  2. It always hurts just a little when you end up with a book whose UK/US counterpart is just better. I personally really like both Strange the Dreamer covers, but might like the UK one sightly more. I’m still not over how beautiful those first editions of Uprooted from the UK (https://www.bookdepository.com/Uprooted-Naomi-Novik/9781447294139?ref=grid-view&qid=1548609906761&sr=1-11). I’m stuck with the US edition which is nice, but I still think about how I missed out on owning the UK edition.

    • I know the feeling!! I always have an internal debate whether to spend money to buy the other edition or just get a whole other book that I haven’t read yet. But I usually just buy multiple editions for books I absolutely loved reading.

THAT COVER IS GORGEOUS! I CAN’T BELIEVE THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I’VE SEEN IT AAAAH. Thanks for the link!! Now I understand how you might feel about it!

  3. I often prefer the US covers over the UK ones (even though I adore UK with all my heart)! It’s also crazy how sometimes buying from Book Depository can be a bit unsettling because you can’t seem to find the book cover that you want for a specific book because BD is mostly UK-based. o.o

But there are also some pretty good UK covers that I adore, so it’s not all bad, haha! Thanks for writing a brilliant post! ❤

    • I totally get what you’re saying about having a hard time finding certain book covers in Book Depository! But I’ve learned that if you’re looking for a certain book cover, searching for their ISBN13 makes everything a lot easier!

Thank you so much! That means a lot to me. ❤

    • Thank you so much! I’ve had a lot of fun writing this. The voting options were a little tedious to do since I had to make one poll for each book but it was all worth it! And I agree, both editions are so gorgeous. I have the US one though I prefer the UK one.

  4. I think I voted for maybe 2 US covers the rest UK. I guess I’m slightly biased since I live in the UK. But also interestingly enough, we do get the US cover editions over here as well as UK ones. So then it’s like well…that’s just mean tempting me with pretty covers.

I think the redesigned covers for the TMI, TID books look super pretty. Erm…I’d find a link but I’m being super lazy. But their spines make up an image as well, and I love how the covers each feature one of the main characters on the cover. I’m anxiously waiting for the TDA boxset to come out with these covers, so then I can drool even more over pretty covers haha. Loved this post Luxe!

    • I do agree that most UK covers are stunning! And I’m really jealous how you get the option of both the UK and US covers since I have to resort to Book Depository for those book covers I love but aren’t available in our country.

It’s alright, I’ve seen the redesigned covers for them and I AM INLOVE!! I have to save up to purchase those soon. Haha.

Thank you so much, Clo. This means a lot to me! ❤
